광화문(光化門)은 조선시대 태조4년(1395년)에 지어진 경복궁 남쪽에 있는 정문으로 임진왜란에 불타 고종(1867년)때 대원군이 중건 하였다. '임금의 큰 덕이 온 나라에 비추어 평안하고 풍요로운 나라가 되고자 함'을 상징한다.
Founded in 1395 by the first king of the Joseon Dynasty, Gwanghwamun is the main gate of Gyeongbok-gung Palace. Roughly meaning 'may the light of enlightenment blanket the world' the name symbolizes the resounding dedication that the people of the Joseon Dynasty had in creating a new dynasty. Constructed soley out of granite, its center is an entrance that resembles a rainbow, called Hongyemun Gate. Above that is a gate tower.
